One of the Early Signs of a Healthy Pregnancy

One of the first signs of a healthy pregnancy is light spotting. This is called implantation bleeding and it occurs around the same time you would expect your period to start. Frequent urination is also typical because your kidneys are processing more blood.

Having a healthy diet, being at a healthy weight and taking prenatal vitamins are important for pregnancy. Getting regular exercise is also good for you and your baby. Avoid foods that are high in sugar and fat and drink plenty of water. Frequent urination can be a sign of pregnancy as your kidneys are processing extra fluid for the baby. Tender, swollen breasts are another sign of early pregnancy. This is a result of hormonal changes and will decrease as you get further along in the pregnancy.

Many pregnant women start out at a normal weight, but you may feel more hungry as your pregnancy progresses. Try not to overeat — the “eating for two” mentality isn’t healthy. Try to eat a variety of healthy foods and talk to your doctor if you have concerns. Many pregnant women experience heartburn because hormones relax the valve between the stomach and esophagus. This is a normal symptom and can be prevented by eating smaller meals, drinking a lot of fluids and not overdoing exercise.

Nausea and Vomiting are Normal in Early Pregnancy

For most women, nausea and vomiting are a normal part of early pregnancy. It is often referred to as morning sickness but can occur at any time of the day and usually peaks before nine weeks. Occasionally the nausea and vomiting can last throughout the entire pregnancy. This is called hyperemesis gravidarum and can cause the pregnant woman to lose weight and dehydrate herself.

It is important to eat small, frequent, bland meals. The symptom is caused by hormones and will usually improve as the pregnancy progresses. Drinking small amounts of ginger or chamomile tea can help with the nausea. It is important to let a health care provider know if the nausea is so severe that you are losing weight or dehydrated. They can provide you with fluids in the hospital if necessary. They may use a handheld Doppler ultrasound to check the heartbeat of the baby. If you do not hear the fetal heartbeat, this is a sign that something is wrong and should be checked immediately.

Many women notice emotional and physical signs that they’re pregnant. These can range from mood changes to nausea and exhaustion. Some women feel a sense of ‘buzz’ or excitement while others experience confusion, anxiety and fear. Early symptoms include a missed period (or sometimes spotting) and the feeling that your nipples are tender, as well as increased vaginal discharge and bloating. Some women experience mild, period-like cramps that come and go. If these are severe, contact your healthcare provider straight away as they may be a sign of an ectopic pregnancy or other serious complication.

Food Cravings are also Common in Early Pregnancy

A heightened sense of smell and food cravings is also common in early pregnancy. You may also find that your sense of taste has changed and you develop a distaste for certain foods. You might also have heartburn because of a hormone that relaxes the valve between your stomach and oesophagus, allowing acid to enter your oesophagus. Many women also experience a sore and swollen abdomen as the uterus expands to make room for the baby.

Pregnancy hormones can contribute to feelings of exhaustion, especially during the second trimester. This is a time when many women feel their best, but don’t be surprised to still feel tired often. It’s important to listen to your body and take breaks from work when possible. This is a good time to ask for and accept help from family and friends. It’s also a great time to start keeping a sleep diary to track things like bedtime, how long it takes to fall asleep, and how often you wake during the night or throughout the day.

Remember that feeling tired during pregnancy is a sign of a healthy pregnancy, and it won’t harm your baby. However, if you’re so tired that it affects your daily life or is accompanied by other symptoms, such as vaginal bleeding, talk to your healthcare practitioner.
